Wax Lips chewing gum became popular in the early 1900s, made from paraffin wax, it was an ingenious use of otherwise useless by-product of the petroleum industry.
This idea expanded during prohibition when wax bottle candy became popular. Famously the ‘Nik-L-Nip’ brand was named in combination of the original cost (a nickel) and the usual method of opening the bottles, to nip (bite) the top off. Once the top is bitten off, the fruit-flavored syrup inside can be sipped and the remaining wax can be chewed like gum. The wax is food-grade and non-toxic, although it is meant to be chewed and not swallowed – so please use caution with younger children.
